Whether you're a licensed professional in a specific field Or Not, you can still earn extra money by monetizing your skills.

Think back... Have you ever helped someone figure out a problem that they just couldn't solve? Do people often come to you asking? Are you creative or in possession of ideas that you know can make life better for others? If you said "Yes" to any of these questions, you have something that you can use to start earning extra money.

So where do you start? That's up to you! I recommend thinking of what you're really good at and then asking how it can help others? How would you let others know about it? Who would need your services? How can you find them? What would you charge and can your ideal client afford your prices? The more you think of your ideal client's needs, the better you'll be able to serve them and make sales. The truth is that you can Sell to others or Become the person that others buy from. The difference is as follows:

  1. If someone buys from you, they come to you for what they need. They know what you have and they come to buy from you because they see value in your product or service.
  2. If you sell to others, you market your product or service to them. They are not looking for what you have. However, when they see the value in it, they decide that they want what you're offering and they buy it from you.

These are the two very basic ways to earn extra money. However, they are not the only ways. You can also earn money passively. By doing something today that will bring you income in the future also, you can maximize your efforts and time. Some common examples of passive income are:

  1. Writing A Book: By creating a book, you can share value in the form of written words. Others can buy your book from you in person, online or even by mail. This is a great way to leave a legacy that adds value to your clients and it also pays you repeatedly for your efforts.
  2. Investing In Real Estate: By buying an investment property, you can add to your net worth and create passive income streams. If a property can be rented or leased, you can receive monthly rent payments. If a property can be bought at a discount or sold for more than you paid to acquire it, you can make an decent profit and maybe even use the funds to buy your next property.
  3. Become a Freelancer: By marketing your skills as a freelancer, you are able to charge for your work as a consultant. You set the hours you work or select the contracts that you take. Make sure to market yourself well and charge competitive prices to keep your freelance options open and flowing.
  4. Become a Narrator: In this busy world, audio lessons and books are becoming more popular daily. If you like reading and are willing to record yourself doing so, you can audition for contracts as a narrator. Some contracts pay a flat rate for completed hours while others pay a percentage of sales in royalties.
  5. Arbitrage: If you can connect people looking for services with people who need those services, you can charge an arbitration fee. Arbitrage is a commonly overlooked way to make extra money. However, if you know where to look and how to make connections, it can be a wonderful source of income.
  6. Monetize Your Social Media: Now each platform has its own rules and criteria for monetization. However, if you meet those criteria, you can earn passive money by utilizing ad revenues on your social media platforms.  Not only does social media allow you to meet and connect with new people in various places, but it also offers a range of opportunities for you to have fun and get paid simply by monetizing your shared content. This being said, if you're not on social media, now may be a great time to get involved or at least check it out. CAUTION: Mindless scrolling won't usually make you money, so set your time limits on each platform and stick to them.
  7. Charge for your services: Can you braid hair, knit, crochet, sew, do make-up, cook, bake, fix cars, design art, style a fashion-clueless friend...? If you have a talent that you enjoy and that others appreciate, market your talent and start charging for it. I myself have earned money on the side by braiding hair for years. Simply braiding my or my kids' hair is a free way to market my skills. When people ask where we got our hair done, I get exchange numbers and set an appointment. If you have a skill that others do not, helping them may be a great way to add income on the side.
  8. Start A Business: Registering a business or partnership may seem like a daunting task. However, I've done it several times already and it's really not that hard to do. Once you register your business name, address, phone number and type with your state, you can start building your brand and earning business credit. Whether you have a traditional brick and mortar or a virtual business, there are several options and ways to earn.
  9. Sell Unwanted Items: Before donating goods that you no longer need, take pictures of them in good lighting and post them on your local marketplace sites online. Have a garage sale or take them to a thrift store for resale. You may be surprised how many people don't mind buying secondhand goods. Replacing your furniture or appliances, gym equipment, clothes or toys? Post them for sale first. You never know... someone may buy them before you purchase your new items.

In short, there are many ways to earn money full time or on the side. Whether you earn passively or actively, earning extra money can feel great!
